If you've only zipped through Ohio on the turnpike, you've really missed some pretty little towns, interesting history and great food. Visit the cosmopolitan city of Columbus and tour its Historic German Village, The Wexler Art Museum, the downtown sights including Short North Arts District. Holmes County is the largest area of Amish villages with its homemade pies, family-style restaurants, and artisan shops. Love gardens? You'll enjoy Kingwood Mansion and Gardens in Mansfield before a stop in Perrysville at the famous Gothic Reformatory where Shawshank Redemption was filmed. It's been closed since the 90s so you can explore sites seen in the movie.

Writer and conservationist, Louis Bromfield lived on his Malabar Farm in Mansfield. He was friends with some of the most celebrated personalities of his time and provided his home for Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall's wedding. He received the Pulitzer Prize for pioneering innovative scientific farming concepts which continue to influence agricultural methodologies around the world. Visit Malabar Farm for lunch. And, no visit to the back roads would be complete without a stop for ice cream at the famous Velvet Ice Cream Factory. You'll also stop at the Corporate Headquarters of the Smucker Family - it's more than jams and jellies and Willard Scott. Their factory store and cafe is a most interesting stop along the way. And a visit to Cleveland's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame along the shores Lake Erie is not to be missed.
